Wars of the Roses - First Household

A quick weeks work to build and paint the appropriate household for my Wars of the Roses project, so that the King has his personal troops.


I'm a "table ready" painter, having done my years of applying multiple coats of layer variants and miniscule highlights that "yes, I know you can't see them, but they are there and I know that they are there and thats whats important DAMN YOUR HIDE!" long ago.


Now, I just work it up to a quality I'm happy with, give it a good washing of shade to make the 3dness of the painting pop a bit, then base it and stick it on the table. Thats it, its done, its quick - thats my current approach. Means I can fire out a lot of models fairly quickly too, which is always a plus.


Of course, then I spend my time whingeing about how the photos don't do the models justice and are flattened out.


I suppose the overall concept is that you can always go back and work up the models to a higher standard if wanting to, but getting the table ready level is the first step in that. Not that I'm probably ever gonna go back and redo stuff when theres always something else needs doing.


Also - I don't play with unpainted models any more. Nope, a game is a rare thing now, so it needs to be worthy of the time and output involved in the games creation.

WW2 Scenario for 24th May 2018

Scenario for a Bolt Action game

Table size - 8X4

Rules - Bolt Action

A coastal town in North Africa is currently held by the British and being used as a staging point and barracks for supplying the region.

Due to the import of this area, a covert operation has been planned by the local German forces, who will attempt to attack in a two pronged attack - one based on the outskirts of town and attempting to distract and obfuscate attention from the other party, a number of units who have disguised themselves as American troops fresh to the area and who will be arriving by boat, disembarking onto the beach.

Primary Mission Germans (Undisguised) - attack the town, distract the British forces barracked and withdraw in good order once the undercover units have undertaken their mission.

Roughly 600 points of units. No vehicles.

Primary Mission Germans (Disguised) - You will enter the town, make way to the ammo and vehicle station and destroy this post.

Roughly 500 points of units. No vehicles

Primary Mission British - The town is under guard, with most troops resting or undertaking the daily duties. If the alert is given, form up into appropriate units and defend the terrain.

Roughly 1200 points broken into two platoons - one of ground troops and one dedicated to vehicles.

Vehicles begin idle and require crew making way to them in order to become active.

Disguised Germans will not be attacked by British forces unless they undertake aggressive action or are challenged and fail to provide correct identification.

New King, New Standards.

Saturday night, after a hard five hours battling in the pub, leading the Parliament forces across Wendle Moor.



I'm sat recovering indoors when we find its Eurovision night. Now, I don't need to watch Eurovision intently, only being required to make the occasional comment, which left me with time..........




So I got on with beginning the next project




An army begins with its leader, as far as I am concerned, so I quickly knocked up my King for the Wars of the Roses

(theres a stray piece of flock on the tabard, which I promptly removed. Thanks, horrifically stark display of photograph detailing!)

BUT!! a King without a standard is little more than a pretender with no authority, in much the same way a regiment without a standard is little more than a skirmisher detachment or a band of scouts!




A standard is the colours, the rallying point and the authority of the persona, and a general NEEDS a standard on display. Any general taking to the field without his colours on full display and aloft deserves a thrashing, frankly.




Next day, spent a quick 15 mins drawing up the required design.

Then added colour later in the evening

(A bonus point to whoever identifies the heraldry.)








And now we have a King fit to lead and inspire his men.

At some point, proper photography will follow. Perhaps when finishing the full division and making them look all flash.
