40K Kill Team - Hereticus + Arbitrators vs White Scars

Played my first ever game of Kill Team last week, and my first 40K based gaming activity for about 7 1/2 years. Was alright! We chucked out a load of the rules and essentially went with "feel" for the game, over mechanics and line of the rule. You know yr getting old when you can do that and not chuck a mental over the small stuff*

Photos below. Also the first outing of my freshly painted graveyard, which'll seen in plenty of pics in the future.

Ended as a much enjoyable draw

Kill Team - Adeptus Arbites

More 40K, this time a small kill team standalone force, consisting of Fascist Pigs and their dog.

Had these for yonks (again, well over a decade!) and they've been rattling around one box or another variously until the time came for their time with the brush.

Still not entirely 100% happy with them, but it'll do for now. Well forever, really, as I'm not repainting them!

Box of Shame #1 - Plaguebearers

Open the box of shame.......whats on top? Ah, Plaguebearers. Easy to build, easy to paint.

Done. These had been kicking around since Nov 2018, which is why they were relatively close to the top.

Think I'll have to knock back the ochre on the bases, looking at it, as its a bit lurid. (....who am I kidding, thats not happening now, is it??)

40K Scenario - Assault on Sentaku IV

Setting:

Sentaku IV, part of the minor Sentaku system, most noted for being the relay hub for the primary comms for the system fleet navigation. A semi arid world, not suited for agriculture, but not uninhabitable. Generally expanses of rocky deserts, mountainous regions, and large rivers along which the majority of the larger cities can be found.

Tertia is the largest city on the planet, located at the fork of the primary river LLoy, where the white Lloy and green Lloy converge. Population around 5 million at the last Censosurv reading carried out by Scribes.

Buildings range from the smaller single person dwelling to the larger administrative buildings hosting the cities governance, naval buildings, navcomm centres and councils, notably the primary archive and records store of the Sentaku system, compactly built into the triangular space afforded by the natural barriers of the rivers on two sides.

Without prior warning or buildup, a Chaos fleet now believed to be led by Lord Skaros dropped into realspace directly within the IV navigation zone and commenced planetfall. Current objectives unknown, but rapid advance towards Tertia through the desert side indicates an aggressive assault to come.

Local defensive forces have been mobilised to strengthen the city, a distress beacon sent prior to the comms being jammed by the Enemie. We await further news of any reinforcements to come.

Game Type – Open Play.

No Stratagems or any of that stuff. No turn limit, play till its over or time is up.

- Story and models come first!
- Points are just a guide!
- Painted only, please!
- Build character, not combos!

Imperium Concepts:

- Think desperate units holding the line. Think falling back into the city street by street when areas become impossible to hold. Think building to building fighting.

Chaos Concepts:

Think forlorn hope. Think storming the barricades. Think raising the flag on the governors palace. Think burning the city and sweeping all before you. Think personal objectives

Forces (Power Level)

Chaos - 100 Primary force, 75 secondary force, 75 tertiary force.
Imperium - 115 + 115 defending forces. Possibly a few extras bits and pieces for flavour

Terrain Layout

8X6 desert table. 1/3 is the defenders deployment, plus a city set into a sprawling 4X2 section of the table. Densely packed, but with streets and squares. Some entrance routes are big enough for a land raider to get into, but only on main drags. Rhinos could get into others. Some areas are accessible on foot only. Rest of table is desert, with palm trees, rocky outcrops and such. There is cover for the chaos side.

Defenders will be given sandbags, crates, barrels and such, they can place that where they want to locate their defence lines and bolster with cover. Rooftops all free for deployment as well.

Attackers have the rest of the table to deploy into, no closer than 20” to the city at any point. Terrain may not make it possible to get closer in some parts.

Deployment happens at the same time on both sides, both for time reasons and to encourage a bit of fog of war element and not being able to specifically deploy in certain places. The battle plan can be developed on the fly during deployment, if a weak spot appears and the overall commander on each side is quick enough to spot it.

Additional Rules:

Units holding intact buildings get a +2 cover bonus, rather than +1. Grenades thrown into buildings and flamers shot into buildings ignore this cover save.

No flyers

Victory conditions:

Chaos – take the city. They must have overall control of it.
Imperial – hold the line. There may be no relief.

Sub Missions - each player will draw a card and reference the table to be brought on the day. These will be narrative sub missions for each general to undertake if they can.

40K - Inquisitor Asquiol Jarrek

Inquisitor Asquiol Jarrek, Ordo Hereticus, Righteous Puritan Bastard.

My old character that was created many many years ago and slogged it across many battlefields of the GrimDarke Futuer in an appallingly naked state has finally received a paintjob.

A decade in the coming, but he can now lead forces, burn Thee Hereteical Foe and generally command awe from the forces around him in fully painted pride.

Faithful Tam, the Head of Memor, takes names, records and steno for future reference and submission.

Lovely. Really enjoyed painting this and it came out just as I wanted. Keep getting tempted to add more, but will just leave it as is.

Had I built this model nowadays, I'd have done them both on a single 32mm or 40mm base, but gotta work with the decisions of the past, and Tam wouldn't have survived cutting off a base, I think.

Pointless fact - part of the character name was derived from the name of Robin Askwith, Polyester God.

2020 Thoughts and Plans

List time. Not that I especially stick to them - one thing I've learned in my job, is that a project doesn't always get delivered when its supposed to, you can handle multiple projects and that having the panoptic overview of the projects is the best way to manage things - but here we go.

1. KEEP GOING, BUT BEHAVE

My painting rate is fairly high. On a slow month, I can bosh out 50 models no problem and I enjoy doing so. However, theres no point doing this if I'm buying more shit than I can feasibly paint (cycling past Orcs Nest on the ride home each night doesn't help, mind).

So, keep going but behave. Handily, Chateau Mosquito isn't full of infinite hiding places for models, so theres a certain limit to what I can own anyhow. And I'm close to that point :)

2. EMPTY THE BOX OF SHAME

I've got bench indoors that you can lift the lid on and use for storage. This is chock full of boxes - a couple of hundred quids worth, some of which has been there for at least five years now. I'll be attacking that mutha with some vigor, which'll mean a varied painting schedule, but once done, done.

Just don't fill the thing up again......

3. A BIT OF NICE PAINTING

Might actually just paint something to a decent quality for once, and not the hammer it out attack I usually approach my stuff with. Small bits in between the mains. Amuse Bouche?

4. GETTING MEDIEVAL

Been steadily working away on medieval stuff, so it seems like thats going to have to see some table time at some point. Just need to do a count and do the pregame work, really.

5. LANDSKNECHTS

Yeah, I gave in and bought that Warlord Games Landsknecht army box. There was a couple reasons behind this - mainly that it was going cheap, I had that itch, I can repurpose my 15th Century stuff into the force when needed and I like blocks of pikes.

How to paint them? Different question altogether, and I'll come back to that at the time.

6. DARK AGES?

Seeing as we seem to be voluntarily entering a new dark age in 2020/its the one long standing interest of mine/I'm doing some archaelogical road tripping' next summer/I've yet to actually complete a project for this era, maybe might possibly perhaps do a very small dark ages project. Thing here is to not go mad and go HASTINGS or somesuch, but to keep it reasonable and viable. This is a low likelihood project, but you never know.

7. TERRAIN

Might take opportunity to filth my terrain up a bit and get it looking a bit more lived in and characterful. I don’t need any more 28mm terrain really (well, except some green hills, maybe), so if I can, I’d like to get some more character into what I do have

8. MASSIVE ROBOT DEATH

As something different from the usual fayre, I think a bit of sci-fi huge robot jox battling/painting is in order. Needs terrain too

Lets see how that lot fares against my ever shortening attention span.
